Very deep, eroding gullies
These wide, deep gullies cannot generally
be blocked. The best approach with these is to block the gullies and grips upstream to reduce flows. However, the edges of the gullies should be re-profiled and re-vegetated. This will probably require the use of geotextiles and reseeding and these techniques are covered in Technical Guidance Notes 3 & 4. In some circumstances where the gully is large and flat-bottomed or U-shaped the use of larger 120cm round bale dams placed in the base of the gully on their flat end should be considered as sediment traps.
For more details see ‘Technical Guidance Note 2 – Specification for large grip/gully blocking’.
